This year in art, students have been exploring a big idea: What can I do with a line? Through drawing, painting, and hands-on projects, they are discovering how lines can create shapes, textures, pictures, and even tell stories!
Student work has been inspired by Now One Foot, Now the Other by Tomie dePaola, helping students to connect art with movement, storytelling, and family relationships.
Kโ2 Students practiced tracing shapes, cutting, and designing by creating special wooden blocks using magazine images. They added personal touches like their initials and birthdates, and even practiced writing thank-you notes!
Kindergarten & 1st Grade students explored curved โhillโ lines and circles to create adorable turkey artwork while strengthening early writing and fine motor skills.
2nd Grade students created tiny illustrated storybooks and beautiful autumn forest scenes, learning how lines and textures bring stories and landscapes to life.
3rd & 4th Grade students used vertical, horizontal, and curved lines in still life artwork, experimenting with new tools like natural grasses to add detail.
Middle School artists studied horizon lines and color blending to create stunning fall landscapes with silhouetted trees using chalk and ink techniques. More recently, students studied profiles and used a line to create a profile with paint.
Throughout all grade levels, students are building important skills like coordination, creativity, and confidence, while learning that something as simple as a line can lead to endless possibilities!
Try this at home: Encourage your child to notice lines in everyday life, on buildings, in nature, or even in letters, and ask, โWhat can you create with that line?โ
