Middle School at the Capitol

On November 15th the middle school students had the opportunity to travel to Des Moines to visit the Iowa State Capital and the State Historical Museum. This trip is a part of the civics unit in which the students are learning about the branches of government and the election process.

Some of the interesting things, according to the students, that they learned during this experience include: the state capital was first built in 1846 in Iowa City, there was a fire that happened in 1904 to the current building in Des Moines, that the dome is re-gilded every 30 years, and that Kim Reynolds is the first woman as governor in Iowa.

Many students’ favorite part of the trip included being able to go to the top of the dome by walking up the winding staircase. They also enjoyed the exhibit at the Historical Museum that highlighted the movies that have been filmed in Iowa.

Being able to take students out of the classroom to engage in the rich history of Iowa is always a great experience not only for the students but for teachers as well.
